What Are the Advantages and Disadvantages of Bone Conduction Headphones?

Dec 13,2022 | Sylvia

Recently, bone conduction headphones have become more and more popular, and everyone's interest in them has become more and more intense, but there are more and more related problems. I have used bone conduction headphones relatively early. I will make a small inventory through some of my experience and talk about the advantages and disadvantages of bone conduction headphones.

Advantages of bone conduction headphones:

1. Bone conduction headphones let our ears to be free and comfortable to wear. Someone who often use headphones know that whether it is in-ear, semi-in-ear or  over-ear headphone, it will cause pressure on the ear. And there will be obvious discomfort after wearing them for a long time. After wearing the headphones for a long time, the ear pinnas may even have obvious pain. Bone conduction headphones will not have the above problems at all. Because they do not touch our ears, but only transmit sound with the help of the vibration of the head bones. So there is comfortable in wearing for a long time, and they can also protect our eardrums. Moreover, most of the bone conduction headphones are relatively light, and there is no sense of weight and pressure when worn, which is the reason why I have always insisted on using bone conduction headphones.

2. Bone conduction headphones are healthier than common headphones. They use the vibration of bones to transmit sound, unlike traditional headphones that need to insert the ear, nor do they need to directly use eardrum to transmit sound. The new method of listening to music of bone conduction is undoubtedly very friendly. It can conduct sound into the nerves inside the ear through the skull, and the impact on ear hearing is minimized. So it has been recommended by many otologists.

3. Bone conduction headphones do not affect normal communication with others, and can also avoid danger. Whether it is in running, cycling, or commuting, etc. You can still hear the surrounding sounds when wearing headphones to listen to songs. Thus you can effectively avoid the danger of accidents caused by not hearing external sounds.

4. Bone conduction headphones also have a high degree of comfort and hygiene. Because they do not insert the ears while wearing, they will not cause a large number of bacteria deposited in the ear canal while exercising or long-term blocking of the ear by headphones. They are generally fixed in the head, not easy to fall off, and will not cause ear hole pain because of long-term wearing. So they are very comfortable and hygienic.

Disadvantages of bone conduction headphones:

The main disadvantage of bone conduction headphones is: its sound quality is inferior to traditional headphones. Because sound is transmitted to the ear bones through the skin and skull, so the sound reproduction is not as good as traditional in-ear headphones.

Another disadvantage of bone conduction headphones is that they are easy to cause sound leakage. In order to wear comfortably, the headphones will not completely fit the skull, so the headphone body drives the air to vibrate, resulting in sound leakage. However, with the rapid development of science and technology, many bone conduction manufacturers have also improved bone conduction headphones. So they could be more comfortable and have better results.

Which are the recommended bone conduction headphones?

There are many reliable brands of bone conduction headphones now, but there are fewer really reliable. Here i recommend two brands: Wissonly and Aftershokz. These two are technology leading brands, and their product experience will be better

1 Wissonly Hi Runner bone conduction headphones

Reason for recommendation: leading brand of bone conduction headphones, mature technology, my favorite

As a veteran electronic product enthusiast, I can responsibly tell you that the Wissonly Hi Runner is real bone conduction headphone. They can protect hearing, so they are also recommended by many otologists.

At the same time, Wissonly Hi Runner is also very good in terms of sound quality. It uses a 360 surrounding vibration unit which can increase the vibration area by 35% compared with traditional bone conduction headphones. It reduces the sound loss during sound transmitting of bone conduction,  and makes the sound more powerful.

Wissonly Hi Runner bone conduction headphones are made of memory titanium, which can be self-adjusted. It can ensure that the headphones have a good wearing experience and it could take into account more users.

As the flagship model of Wissonly bone conduction in terms of functionality, Hi RUNNER model supports IPX8 waterproof level which is higher than the industry standard, and it can be worn for diving. It is equipped with 32G body memory and the latest Bluetooth 5.0 chip. Its product performance and experience have been comprehensively improved, truly making bone conduction headphones suitable for more life scenes.

2 AfterShokz Openrun PRO bone conduction headphones

Reason for recommendation: The tuning and wearing are good, a relatively mature bone conduction product.

Openrun PRO also pays great attention to wearing comfort. Its body is made of skin-friendly silicone, which makes it more comfortable and be better enjoyed. In order to reduce the weight, titanium alloy is selected for the headphone body. It also makes it not easy to bend and deform, thus ensuring its service life. The bone conduction headphones are also equipped with Qualcomm QCC3024 and Bluetooth 5.0 chip, which makes the stable connection in daily use without disconnection.
